How You Can Double Your Blog Post Views Using This One Platform
If you follow me on Instagram then you might have caught my story where I was obsessing over Medium but most people said (shout out to Instagram for their poll feature) that they didn't even know what Medium was!
Well, I’m here to talk about the best way to gain readership on both your new and old blog posts.I know I said you can double your blog post views in the title but you honestly can 10X them, depending on how effectively you use the platform.
Since you are a business owner or aspiring entrepreneur odds are you probably blog, right? If you aren’t then let this be the push to finally start!
Most of the time when people hear the word blogging they think of a self hosted blog with their own domain name, which is necessary BUT let’s talk about why you should care about blogging on Medium as well.
Before I get into what Medium is and how to use it to grow your readership I want to quickly mention a few ways in which you are probably driving traffic to your blog right now:
This basically means you are asking people to jump from one platform/website and driving them to your blog. But what if you could go to where there was already an audience that was looking to read what you are sharing?
That’s basically what Medium is! Think of Medium as a mix between Facebook and a blog… let me explain.
A publishing platform where people can read important, insightful stories on the topics that matter most to them and share ideas with the world. As a writer on Medium, you can share your story with the world with our easy to use editor. Publishing on Medium is free and stories you publish may be distributed to your followers, as well as millions of readers who follow relevant topics.
On Medium you have either a profile or publication or both! So you can literally decide to start blogging today and be up and running within five minutes.
Think of a Medium profile as your FB profile. Like FB, when people follow you they can see what you post in their news feed (under the “From Your Network” area in your Medium homepage) and click your profile if they want to see your latest status updates or in this case your latest post.
BUT (here is where it gets interesting) people don't have to follow you in order to come across your work! This is where publications and tags come in.
You can either write for a publication or have your own (or both of course). If you want to start a publication then it will definitely require a bit more work in terms of recruiting other writers to write for your publications and gaining more followers.
You don’t have to recruit other writers if you don’t want but then this means you’re the only one writing for your publication. The way the Medium algorithm works is that it suggests your publication to others if you publish content consistently perhaps even daily.
If you are looking to get more views on your posts without putting the upfront work of building up a publication then I 100% recommend for you to write for a publication rather than start one.
Writing for a publication means that you get to put your posts in front of their audience! This is huge because some publications have thousands of followers, as in up to 374,000 followers! Here are some pretty popular publications:
I am personally a writer for five of the above mentioned and love Medium as a platform and community.
How do you become a writer for these publications? Believe it or not it’s actually fairly easy for most of them. There is a couple of ways you can go about it:
Request to become a writer with a click of a button through Smedian
Some publications aren’t on Smedian so I would suggest you visit each publication and search around for their “Becoming a writer instructions”
It’s harder to get into publications like “The Mission” so this is where being relentless pays off! You will probably have to submit your story to them more than a couple of times before it gets accepted.
Once you become a writer for these publications then you will appear on their publication site + most publications send out emails to their followers with recent/featured posts so this is another potential way you can gain exposure.
You are probably already familiar with this word so it doesn't need much explanation but with Medium there’s a twist to it.
When you write a story aka post you can include up to five tags which will help with discoverability and in gaining top writer status.
This means that people may be following/searching for a certain tag and can come across your work if you included that tag in your post before publishing.
Also, if you publish posts that are consistently about a certain topic and you tag them (ex: Business), then after a while you can gain top writer status for that given tag.
Claps, comments, and highlighting
Another great thing about Medium is that it allows people to engage easily with your posts. Claps are the equivalent to likes on Medium and is one of the ways Medium measures engagement. There are other measures of engagement on Medium so check those out here.
Medium Partner program
Apart from views, claps, comments, and exposure Medium is now rewarding creators by actually paying you for your work!
With the Medium Partner Program you can actually make money for what you write! When medium members engage with your story Medium takes that as a sign that you are providing quality content so this is how they determine how much money you will receive for that certain story.
It depends how much engagement you get but I've seen people make anywhere from a couple of dollars to a couple grand!
Here is more on the Medium Partner Program.
Duplicate content and SEO
“But what if I don't want to write new blog posts just for Medium? Can I just copy and paste posts that I already have?”
Yes and no… Again, let me explain.
If you’ve been blogging for a while then you are pretty much set, content wise, but there is more that goes into it. Yes, you can import a story but you have to make it native to Medium.
You wouldn't post a FB status on Twitter because it’s not native to the platform and it’s the same with Medium. You have to adapt your content to be “Medium friendly”.
If you are worried about having duplicate content and having it affect SEO then read this article about how Medium helps avoid this issue.
How to get started on Medium
By now I’m sure you can see all that you can do with Medium and why I love it so much!
The way I found out about Medium is actually a pretty funny story. Basically I somehow came across this video on Facebook about some guy who took a road trip from the east coast to SF while freelancing but was now a full time blogger on Medium.
I was so intrigued by his story that I started to do some research about what Medium was and how he was getting some many views. At the time that “some guy” I mentioned had about 17k followers on Medium and I found myself binge reading all his posts.
That “some guy” is Tom Kuegler and he now has 23k followers on Medium! After watching that video I reached out to Tom via Instagram DM’s and he was so helpful and knowledgeable about Medium + how to build online influence that I ended up signing up for his course.
It’s been crazy seeing how far he’s come and am so glad I clicked on that video because now I consider him a friend.
